Co-founder of IDeT-gestalt

Gestalt-therapist, trainer, supervisor. Organizer of the Third International Conference on Gestalt Therapy Research in Paris 2017, he is in charge of the Research Committee of the EAGT (European Association for Gestalt Therapy), member of the SPR (Society for Psychotherapy Research) and of the NYIGT (New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy).

Member of the reading committee of the Revue Gestalt for 10 years, he has written more than fourty articles on Gestalt Therapy in various French and English journals and translated many others.

With Florence Belasco he directed the dossier on Gestalt therapy in « Le journal des psychologues »s - issue of July-August 2018 - as well as the book « Recherche » of the SFG and the CEG-t -t published in July 2018.

He has also been practicing Wu style TaiChiChuan for thirty years. He teaches this discipline in Toulouse and Paris. He has written two books on this topic.

The article describes the entry of Gestalt therapy into research on psychotherapy, allowing it to take its place in current debates. This research is evolving towards taking better account of the complexity of therapeutic work, by revaluing qualitative work and studying more finely the modalities of adjustment of the therapist to the characteristics of the client and the evolution of the relationship. The article presents current research and the relevance of gestalt practitioners' contributions to psychotherapy research.

In this paper, the four coveners of the Paris Conference (May 2017) tell us why and how a research tradition in Gestalt therapy is starting to grow: the uniqueness and relevance of Gestalt therapy merits joining the psychotherapy research field to receive legitimation and the Gestalt community has already undertaken good research projects and achieved valuable results. The Gestalt community is now mobilised and the success of the Paris Conference seems to be a turning point. The authors continue by discussing how research can fit with Gestalt anthropology and show how this emerging tradition is connected with and part of the wider field of contemporary psychotherapy research. Finally, they focus on the training and development of the reflexive awareness of the therapist, advocating a more research-orientated attitude.

The author develops a pragmatic perspective on the therapeutic experience, in particular from the therapist's perspective, and this is done in two essential realms. He suggests, on the one hand, that the therapist's aim with his client might be to teach “attentional gestures” that allow the progress of the process of awareness. On the other hand, by putting cooperative action in the center of the transformation process, he emphasize that being a Gestaltist “is constantly and patiently to establish the conditions of intense cooperation and remain open on the opportunity of a joint and continual investigation on hazards inherent in this cooperation”.

Ethics and professional conduct

All IDeT trainers are members of a professional association with a complaints committee and adhere to a code of professional conduct (EAGT, FPGT, SFG, CEGt or similar).

All holders of the IDeT certificate in relational Gestalt therapy undertake to join a professional association with a code of ethics and a complaints committee.

Complaint procedure

In the event of ethical difficulties or complaints, the IDeT implements the following process in accordance with the requirements of the organizations to which it is affiliated.

1 – The person is invited to request a meeting with the IDeT management to inform them of their difficulties.

2 – Search for solutions to deal with difficulties and complaints

3 – If no solution is found: a mediator assists the complainant in their efforts, organizes a mediation meeting, or refers the complainant to external professional or judicial bodies (FPGT, EAGT, courts, etc.). Within 48 hours of the mediation, the mediator sends the IDeT management a written note summarizing the discussions and proposed courses of action.

4- If no amicable agreement is reached, the complainant has the option of referring the matter free of charge to the consumer mediator responsible for IDeT, namely the Association of European Mediators (AME CONSO), within one year of the written complaint being sent to IDeT.

The role of the scientific and pedagogical council is to assist the institute in the preparation and evaluation of its training courses and in the implementation of research projects for IDeT and its students.

IDeT has chosen as members of this council personalities who, beyond having a brilliant academic background, have close perspectives on the patient-therapist relationship which they consider as a central factor in the change process. These personalities have agreed to collaborate with IDeT to help its students to put it at the heart of their psychotherapeutic practice.

Xavier Briffault

Xavier Briffault is a researcher in social sciences and epistemology of mental health at the CNRS, attached to CERMES3 (Centre de recherche, médecine, sciences, santé, santé mentale, société). He is particularly interested in depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, psychotherapies and mental health prevention programs. On these topics, he develops a sociologically and epistemologically informed analysis of the effectiveness of interventions, particularly in the context of the extension of the Evidence-based medicine (EBM) paradigm to mental medicine. Author of several dozen publications, he is an expert for several public health institutions (HCPS, HAS,...).

Willi Butollo

Willi Butollo is professor of psychology at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, trainer in Gestalt Therapy, author of the dialogical exposure therapy for trauma and founder of the MIT - Mûnchen Institute für Trauma. He is the author of numerous books and articles on trauma and anxiety and has conducted extensive research on these topics.

Louis Castonguay

Louis G. Castonguay, PhD, is Professor of Psychology at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State University, USA). Internationally recognized for his work on processes of change in psychotherapy, he is the author of numerous publications with more than 140 articles and eight co-edited books on integration in psychotherapy, principles of therapeutic change, the therapist's effect, insight and corrective experiences in psychotherapy, research and practice of therapy, and psychopathology. A leader in the integrative approach to psychotherapy, he develops practice-based research networks that foster collaboration between practitioners and researchers. He has received several awards and honours for his career, and has served as President of the Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR).

Florence BELASCO

Co-founder of IDeT-gestalt

Psychotherapist and clinical psychologist, she has been a Gestalt-therapist for twenty years. She is a certified supervisor by the EAGT (European Association for Gestalt Therapy) and trainer in several institutes.

Throughout her career, she has been interested in non-verbal and somatic aspects of Body Psychotherapy and has practiced several therapeutic approaches: Art Therapy, Systemic and Emotion Focused Couple Therapy (Emotion Focused Therapy) as well as EMDR. She has thus developed a resolutely integrative and relational posture of which Gestalt Therapy is the heart.

She is a member of the Research Committee of the EAGT (European Association for Gestalt Therapy), holder of the CEP (European Certificate of Psychotherapy), member of the SPR (Society for Psychotherapy Research) and of the SEPI (Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration).
She was one of the leaders of the French organizing committee of the international symposium on Gestalt Therapy Research in Paris in 2017.

With Vincent Béja she directed the dossier on Gestalt therapy in the Journal des psychologues of July-August 2018 as well as lthe book « Recherche » of the SFG and the CEG-t published in July 2018.

Lynne Jacobs,PhD, Psych. D., is a Gestalt therapist and co-founder with Gary Yontef of the Pacific Gestalt Institute (PGI) in Los Angeles (CA. USA) where she teaches and supervises. She is also a psychoanalyst, teacher and supervisor at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis (ICP) in Los Angeles. She has published numerous articles and book chapters in both Gestalt therapy and Psychoanalysis. She is co-author with R. Hycner of the book : The Healing Relationship in Gestalt Therapy: A Dialogic-Self Psychological Approach (1995).
She is an international gestalt trainer and has a private practice in Los Angeles, California USA.

Lynne Jacobs has made a major contribution to the installation of relationship at the heart of contemporary Gestalt Therapy.

When the book “Healing Relationship in Gestalt Therapy” was published in 1995, prominent theorists and teachers Erving and Miriam Polster wrote in the preface that “Every theory needs to be brought alive by the contributions of new generations; the book by Rich Hycner and Lynne Jacobs makes an important contribution to the renewal of Gestalt Therapy”.
These words were prophetic because the “relationality” of the therapeutic encounter is now considered an integral part of Gestalt therapy. Gary Yontef, another leading Gestalt theorist, has since written: “A relational perspective is so essential to the theory of Gestalt Therapy that without it, there can be no coherence in theory or practice.”
From its initial publication to the present day, “The Healing Relationship in Gestalt Therapy” has been the basic book on which a practice of therapeutic dialogue has been developed with the support of Martin Buber's philosophy of dialogue.

Jan Roubal, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist, Gestalt therapist, supervisor, international trainer, and associate professor of psychotherapy at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, where he participates in the work of the psychotherapy research center.
He was also head of the research committee of the EAGT (European Association for Gestalt Therapy) from 2013 to 2019. He has published numerous research articles. He is also deeply involved in the theory and practice of field Gestalt therapy and works closely with Gianni Francesetti and Michela Gecele.
He has co-edited four books: “Current Psychotherapy,” “Gestalt Therapy in Clinical Practice,” “From Psychopathology to the Aesthetics of Contact,” and “Towards a Research Tradition in Gestalt Therapy.”
