INITIATION TO CONTEMPORARY GESTALT THERAPY

In partnership with the Pierre Janet Centre of the University of Lorraine.

By proposing a model of change based on the use of the therapist's resonances within the therapeutic relationship, contemporary Gestalt therapy opens up a new paradigm. It is at the forefront of putting the therapist's person at the service of patients' change processes. It is thus in line with the most recent results of psychotherapy research which show that the person of the therapist is the most relevant variable in the effectiveness of a therapy.

Alternating theory and practice, this training (from level 1) will introduce the trainee to the understanding of contemporary Gestalt therapy and begin to use elements of it in their clinic.
With level 2 she will be able to engage in the in-depth training offered by IDeT and its modules “At the heart of the clinic”.

The level 1 module does not require any pre-requisites to be attended.
Entry to the level 2 module requires the completion of level 1.

Body, emotional and affective resonances are the central material of therapeutic intervention from a relational and field perspective.
This training, which is central to the IDeT clinical perspective, will enable you to use more clearly and effectively what you experience in session with your patients

We are always affected by our patient just as they are constantly affected by us. In this complex system of resonances, the therapist can often feel helpless, arrested, even abused. We will offer participants a method and guideposts for attuning their experience to that of the patient in a way that is opening and growth-inducing.

With this training you will better understand your personal dynamics as a therapist, its effects on the therapeutic encounter and will soften and enrich your ways of reacting to the diversity of your patients.

This module explores the effects of participants' motivation to be therapists, their personal histories, life experiences, the attachment patterns that characterize them and, ultimately, the impact they can have on others and therefore on their patients.

We will accompany the participants in the practical application and handling of these aspects in the therapeutic encounter.

Florence Belasco - Would you then describe and illustrate what the posture of the Gestalt therapist is, since he does not treat symptoms directly, nor does he have an intrapsychic vision of the client's problem?

Gianni Francesetti - The Gestalt therapist is above all in a posture of curiosity and openness, without preconceived ideas and oriented towards the discovery of the meaning of what is happening. Everything that happens can be interesting. But this requires paying full attention to it and being able to stay long enough in this openness.

The risk for the therapist is to be caught in the field that is actualized, to play the same game: I can be depressed with a depressed person or be reactive to it, I can feel alone with someone who has panic attacks or react to it, I can feel little considered in a narcissistic field, suffer it or react to it... but all this is not therapy. To do therapy is to recognize what is happening, not to identify totally in this field while having the possibility to live in it, and to remain as much as possible present anyway.

The essence of the posture is to really consider that what is happening is co-created. And the crucible of the therapy consists in changing what I am creating with the patient and not in changing him, in being less depressed when he is depressed, less alone with him when he has panic attacks, less narcissistic etc...

How do bodies speak? How can we open these embodied stories to further exploration in online therapy? — 27 of February 2021

The therapist and the client can be seated in two different geographical locations. They are not in the same room, do not share the same air. Yet there is an evolving field online in which the two living bodies move around each other. Facial expressions, tone of voice, gestures and small movements circulate in both directions, thus speaking without words.
During this one-day seminar we will explore our own way of being embodied. Questions such as: “What do I breath/absorb/accept from the other living body as we speak?”, “How do we move each other?” will guide us towards a deeper exploration of the ongoing communication of our bodies with each other.
In a supervised setting, we will focus on inter-body patterns, the aesthetics of the background, the embodied field, the rhythms and melodies of body-to-body communication. We will examine possible interventions and experiences.

Drawing on her long experience as a psychotherapist and trainer in both face-to-face and online work, Julianne Appel-Opper wants to provide a safe and respectful space for the exploration of these processes through exercises, experimental work and small group work.

Lynne Jacobs, Ph.D., Psy-i0 D., is a Gestalt therapist and co-founder of the Pacific Gestalt Institute (PGI) in Los Angeles (CA. USA) where she teaches and supervises. She is also a psychoanalyst, teacher and supervisor at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis (ICP) in Los Angeles.
In her book The Healing Relationship in Gestalt Therapy: A Dialogic-Self Psychological Approach (1995) (co-authored with R. Hycner) and through her teaching she has greatly contributed to anchoring Gestalt Therapy in a relational perspective.

Gestalt therapy with its fundamental concept of field and the theory of intersubjective systems with its notion of intersubjective field both highlight the inextricable intertwining of our emotional lives.
The full consideration of this field both removes the stable landmarks of Cartesian objectivity and at the same time allows us to consider therapy from a new angle. In this perspective, the therapist's task is to become fully involved at the emotional level in an exchange that is best able to recognize the profound meanings of the patient's experience in the actuality of what is lived together during the session.

Objectives of this Master Class

The aim of this seminar is to provide sensitive reference points to guide the participants' field practice as well as to help them to support emotional regulation in a dialogical setting.

Florence Belasco - Can you then describe and illustrate what the gestalt therapist's posture is, since he does not directly treat the symptoms, nor does he have an intrapsychic vision of the client's problem?

Gianni Francesetti - The gestalt therapist is above all in a posture of curiosity and openness, without preconceived ideas and oriented towards discovering the meaning of what is happening. Everything that happens can be interesting. But it requires to pay full attention to it and to be able to stay long enough in this opening.

The risk for the therapist is to be caught in the field which is actualizing itself, to play the same game: I can be depressed with a depressed person or be reactive to it, I can feel alone with someone who has panic attacks or react to it, I can feel little considered in a narcissistic field, undergo it or react to it... but all this is not therapy. To do therapy is to recognize what is happening, not to identify oneself totally in this field while having the possibility to live in it, and to remain as much as possible present anyway.

The essence of the posture is to really consider that what is happening is co-created. And the crucible of the therapy consists in changing what I am creating with the patient and not in changing him, to be less depressed when he is depressed, less alone with him when he has panic attacks, less narcissistic etc...
